Tibet is an ancient civilization with its own rich cultural
and religious past. Annexed by China, this ancient Buddhist
kingdom’s most treasured city of Lhasa is the object
of devout pilgrimage to the Buddhists and followers of Dalai
Lama. The Himalayan fortress of Tibet, home to the Dalai Lama
and Mount Everest, is often referred to as the rooftop of
the world. The highest peak of Tibet, also the highest in
Himalayas and in the whole world, is Everest, which is as
high as 8,846.27 meters above sea level. It is one of the
most extraordinary and adventurous destinations.
The spectacular trans-Himalayan drive through mountain passes
and glaciers, offers a panorama of a cultural and scenic diversity
unsurpassable anywhere. It culminates on an arid plateau -
a veritable treasure grove of architectural masterpieces -
the Buddhist monasteries of Drepung, once the largest
in the country, the Jhokhang - a spiritual center, and the
awesome palaces of the Dalai Lama - Norbulinga ( the summer
palace ) and the Potala (the traditional seat ). It is freezing
cold in most time of the year. Most tourists come to visit
Tibet only in the warmest seasons, June, July, august and
early September
This is a wonderful and amazing trip however, if you are not
up for a bit of adventure, or for accommodations and amenities
that may be far from perfect, perhaps this trip is not for
you. While the trip to Tibet is not easy it is well worth
the effort. Tibet was opened to tourism in 1985. Before this
it avoided influence from the western world and developed
its unique culture and religion independently. The infrastructure
of the tourist industry is still very basic in this remote
country. Please do not expect the standard you are accustomed
to in the west. However every effort will be made under the
circumstance to ensure a smooth and pleasant trip.
